Tourists in Bali are being urged to prioritize safety, especially in\ntop tourist destinations at night.<\/p>\n
Security officers and police teams are conducting additional patrols\nto help keep everyone safe, but there are efforts tourists can make to\nminimize risk.<\/p>\n
One of the most important calls for tourists in Bali right now is to\nreport crime as soon as possible. There is something of an urban myth\nthat crime against tourists in Bali is not taken seriously.<\/p>\n
Nothing could be further from the truth. In many cases, when theft or\nother crimes against tourists have been reported, the perpetrators have\nbeen brought to justice quickly. In incidents of theft, items have been\nlocated and returned before they could be damaged or sold on.<\/p>\n
Tourists are being urged to be mindful of one of the most frequent\ncrimes in Bali: bag snatching. This is a crime committed often by\nopportunistic criminals, but also by those who target dimly lit areas in\ntourist resorts late at night. Thieves ride up to pedestrians and snatch\ntheir bags while catching them unawares.<\/p>\n
In other cases they thieves grab things they can get their hands on\nquickly, including phones, wallets, and jewelry.<\/p>\n
In most cases, these incidents happen to pedestrians, but\nincreasingly, police are reporting that thieves are sidling up beside\ntourists who are driving mopeds late at night, targeting them while they\nare stopped at a red light, stuck in traffic, or driving slowly. These\nare all deeply distressing incidents for victims, as was the case\nearlier this week.<\/p>\n
A Singaporean tourist was the victim of a snatching in Canggu at 11\npm on Sunday evening. The thief is reported to have been riding a Yamaha\nNMAX motorcycle and to have approached the tourist from behind,\ncornering him off the road. The thief is reported to have snatched the\nvictim\u2019s 24-gram gold necklace. The incident took place on Gang Anggrek,\nCanggu Village.<\/p>\n
North Kuta Police Chief, Commissioner I Ketut Sukadana, confirmed the\nincident to reporters, saying, \u201cThe alleged perpetrator came from behind\nand immediately snatched the victim\u2019s necklace, then fled at high\nspeed.\u201d He confirmed that the victim attempted to chase down the thief\non this moped but fell, injuring his hands.<\/p>\n
The 26-year-old tourist, known by his initials CHYH, quickly reported\nthe incident to the North Kuta Police. PC Sukadana confirmed that North\nKuta Police officers immediately went to the scene to conduct a crime\nscene investigation and gather statements from the victim and witnesses.\nOfficers also reviewed CCTV footage along the attacker\u2019s escape\nroute.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been confirmed that police found at least six CCTV points that\nallegedly recorded the attacker\u2019s movements before and after the\nattack.<\/p>\n
PC Sukadana: \u201cThe victim has filed an official report. We are still\ngathering evidence and examining CCTV footage to identify the\nperpetrator.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tourists who are driving or walking back to their accommodation at\nnight are urged to keep their valuables out of sight and ideally keep\nall valuables in a safe in their room, villa, or at their accommodation.\nTourists are encouraged to book taxis to travel at night in Bali, and if\nthey must walk, stick to well-lit routes with people around.<\/p>\n
Leaders in Bali are working to improve safety for both tourists and\nthe wider local community, especially during this high travel\nseason.<\/p>\n
Last month, Bali\u2019s Deputy Governor Nyoman Giri Prasta told reporters\nthat safety for tourists is a top priority for the government. He\nshared, \u201cWhatever the situation, whether at the global, regional, or\nnational level, Bali must remain safe and inclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n
He called for a collective effort to improve safety in the top\ntourism resort area, bringing together all security forces on the island\nfor a roll call event in Denpasar.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor Prasta told security teams, \u201cWith the synergy of the\nTNI, Polri, Pecalang, and the entire community, various potential\nproblems can be anticipated so that Bali remains safe, comfortable, and\nconducive.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the event of an emergency, tourists can contact Bali Police on\n110; English operators are available. If it is not possible to call,\ntourists should seek the support of the nearest pecalanag officers who\nare stationed across every village on the island, and who are first\nresponders in emergencies and can coordinate access to police and\nemergency services.<\/p>\n
