'Bali needs red-light districts'<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: A travel agency entrepreneur says that Bali,
\nwith its thriving tourism industry, needs localization of red-
\nlight districts.<\/p>\n
\"Bali really needs localization of prostitution,\" John Ketut
\nPanca said during a seminar here entitled \"Sun, Sea, Sand, Sex
\nand Culture Tourism\" at Warmadewa University yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"The society and the government shouldn't be hypocritical
\nabout this,\" he added. \"Prostitution has been around for ages,
\nanyway.\"<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the sex industry is already booming in
\nseveral districts, including Kuta and Sanur.<\/p>\n
In a bid to scrap the tourist industry's image here as being
\ninseparable from the sex trade, then-governor Ida Bagus Mantra
\ncampaigned to promote the notion of \"cultural tourism.\" Bali, he
\nargued 20 years ago, is rich with cultural heritage and this is
\nwhat should be promoted.<\/p>\n
A French anthropologist working at the Club Med Hotel,
\nhowever, estimated that only 10 percent of Bali's tourists go
\nthere to observe its culture. The rest, he said, come to avoid
\nthe cold seasons in their countries. (23)<\/p>",
