Bali Fashion Week eyes international attention<\/p>\n
DENPASAR (JP): With the country facing a serious downfall
\nsocially, politically and economically, Bali is still eager to
\nhold the second Bali Fashion Week at Grand Bali Beach Hotel in
\nSanur from May 9 through May 13.<\/p>\n
Organized by Bali Moda Foundation, the Fashion Week is mainly
\naimed at providing a forum for local designers, garment
\nproducers, manufacturing and exporters to promote their creations
\nand products to local and international potential buyers.<\/p>\n
Designer Mardiana Ika, chairwoman of the organizing committee,
\nsaid recently in Kuta, Bali, that the event was also a good
\nopportunity for related parties to meet each other and to make
\nbusiness transactions.<\/p>\n
\"Last year (the first Bali Fashion Week), business
\ntransactions were very good. Many of participants received a bulk
\nof orders,\" said Ika, also managing director of Hong Kong-based
\nButoni fashion.<\/p>\n
This year's Fashion Week will be participated in by a large
\nnumber of young designers such as Aliki, Monika Weber and Rizal
\nas well as garment and textile producers, producers of leather
\ngoods, accessories and jewelry.<\/p>\n
\"I admitted it was very hard to convince some people to take
\npart in the coming event. Many first agreed to participate but at
\nthe last minute canceled,\" said Ika, a graduate of the London
\nCollege of Fashion.<\/p>\n
Ika said she understood that the current situation had
\ndiscouraged designers and other participants from taking part in
\nexhibitions and trade fairs both here and abroad.<\/p>\n
\"Our economy is at its lowest ebb. But, in my opinion, we have
\nto do something to promote Indonesian products otherwise we will
\nleft out by international buyers,\" Ika said.<\/p>\n
Potential buyers who have contacted the organizing committee
\ncome from various countries such as Indonesia, Japan, Hong Kong,
\nTaiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Greece, Spain, France,
\nGermany, the United States, South Africa and Middle East
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
\"Don't forget the Bali Fashion Week will be extensively
\ncovered by local and international media, therefore participants
\nwill benefit from worldwide coverage,\" Ika added.<\/p>\n
Ika went on to say that reputable print and broadcast media
\nsuch as CNN, Fashion Channel, The South China Morning Post, Japan
\nBusiness News, Book Moda would be covering the event.<\/p>\n
\"If you have your work shown on CNN, how many people will see
\nit? How many buyers will view your creations?\" Ika said.<\/p>\n
She said she had the full support of the Bali provincial
\ngovernment, the Bali Tourism Board (BTB), the Indonesian Chamber
\nof Commerce and Industry (Kadin), the Indonesian Fashion
\nDesigners Association (APPMI) and the Indonesian Fashion
\nDesigners Council (IPMI).<\/p>\n
\"It Is lucky that Bali is still safe and many foreigners are
\nstill willing to travel to the island,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The event is expected to promote Indonesian products in the
