Bali deports prostitutes<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: The recent deportation of three Filipino
\nprostitutes without trial has sparked controversy.<\/p>\n
"They were deported because they misused their tourist visas.
\nWe deported them for the sake of the nation's image," the chief
\nof the Bali immigration office, Lapian, said. "The whole process
\nis all legal."<\/p>\n
Chief of the Badung police precinct Lt. Col. C.N. Patty said
\nyesterday the authorities did not have enough evidence to bring
\nthem to court.<\/p>\n
Lawyer Agus Saputra challenged the police argument that they
\nlacked evidence. "Emily was caught red-handed having sex with a
\nman in a hotel. She admitted she received Rp 1 million ($425) for
\nthat," he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Lapian claimed he was not involved in the process
\nand that he learned of the deportation from the head of the local
\njustice office.<\/p>\n
Immigration officials identified the Filipinos as Roweina, 23,
\nVicki Mateo, 24, and Emily Castaneda, 29. Roweina and Vicki told
\npolice that they worked with the notorious sex trade ring
\ncontrolled by Hartono, who was previously jailed for running
\nseveral brothels in some major cities.<\/p>\n
Lapian's explanation was questioned by local lawyers, who
\nwarned that the deportation without trial would set a bad
\nprecedence.<\/p>\n
"I'm afraid immigration authorities will deport without trial
\ndrug traffickers simply because the law enforcers don't want to
\ntake pains in dealing with them," said lawyer Agus Saputra.
