Bali denies report cholera<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Bali restaurateurs denounced the Japanese
\nnewspapers for suggesting an outbreak of cholera on the holiday
\nisland without bothering to check the facts.<\/p>\n
Soewito Raharjo of the Bali chapter of Association of Hotel
\nand Restaurants said the Japanese press based their reports on
\nclaims by 19 Japanese tourists who recently returned from Bali
\ncomplaining of stomach problems.<\/p>\n
\"It could've been an indigestion problem. How do they know for
\nsure that it was cholera? Did they find they even had the virus?\"
\nSoewito told the Antara news agency on Saturday.<\/p>\n
He said a number of Japanese package tours to Bali have been
\ncanceled following the reports.<\/p>\n
He also deplored at the government's inaction in the face of
\nsuch damaging press reports.<\/p>\n
Soewito said Bali also happened to be the last stop for the 19
\nJapanese tourists and so if they had indeed contracted cholera,
\nthey could have picked it up on other stops.<\/p>\n
If there was an outbreak of cholera in Bali, then how come no
\nother tourists or local people are infected? he asked.<\/p>\n
Soewito said the reports should not severely affect the inflow
\nof tourists to Bali because Japanese are not the only foreign
\ntourists who visit the island.<\/p>\n
Besides, the validity of the report is doubtful and that any
\nimpact on the number of Japanese tourists visiting is likely to
