Bali bamboo conference draws world's interest<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Bamboo enthusiasts and environmentalists from
\nall over the world are meeting in Bali for the fourth
\nInternational Bamboo Congress, Workshop, and Festival.<\/p>\n
The four-day conference, which begins in Ubud on June 19, will
\nbe marked by a gala benefit evening at the Four Seasons Resort on
\nJune 17, which will celebrate Indonesian art, culture, and
\nfashion.<\/p>\n
The conference, which will discuss the potential of bamboo as
\na more efficient timber substitute, is attracting international
\nmedia attention. The international television broadcaster CNN
\nwill provide coverage of both the gala event and the conference.
\nElsa Klench of CNN Style will provide commentary on the fashion
\nshow, which will feature the collections of Biyan, Prajudi, and
\nGhea Sukarya.<\/p>\n
\"Bamboo, people and the environment\" is the theme of the
\nconference, but that will not be the focus of the fashion show.<\/p>\n
\"All the clothes will use Indonesian textiles\", said Ghea
\nSukarya, \"but they will not have a specifically bamboo-like
\ncharacter\".<\/p>\n
The accompanying music festival, featuring 27 groups of bamboo
\nmusicians and dancers from across the archipelago, will be more
\nbamboo-oriented. MTV Asia is also expected to cover the event.
\nPeter Gabriel is scheduled to make a CD recording of the event
\nfor his Real World music label.<\/p>\n
The Environmental Bamboo Foundation and The International
\nBamboo Foundation of America are hosting the event, in co-
\noperation with the Center for Research and Development in
\nBiology, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, and various state
\nMinistries. Linda Garland, founder of the Environmental Bamboo
\nFoundation and a world-renowned interior designer, hopes the
\nevent will promote the use of bamboo. At present, more than 5,000
\nuses have been identified for bamboo, ranging from industrial use
\nto medicinal and food purposes.<\/p>\n
Bamboo is the world's fastest growing plant and also one of
\nits most durable products. Its elastic quality inspired the
\norganizers to promote the use of bamboo for architecture in
\nearthquake zones. Flores, the Eastern Indonesian island which
\nrecently experienced major earthquakes, is the first target of
\nits bamboo farm development.<\/p>\n
Toto Tasmara of the Humpuss Group, one of the conference's
\nsponsors, said: \"Part of the benefit's proceeds will go into
\nfunding bamboo farms in Flores and rebuilding the island with
