Bakrie appointed to resilience council<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has appointed the chairman of the
\nIndonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Aburizal
\nBakrie, to replace noted businessman Anthony Salim as the
\nsecretary-general of the Economic and Monetary Resilience
\nCouncil.<\/p>\n
Aburizal, known as Ical, confirmed his appointment to
\nreporters yesterday, but said the presidential decree for it had
\nyet to be issued.<\/p>\n
Former president Soeharto appointed Anthony Salim, the son of
\ngiant Salim Group founder Lim Sioe Liong, in March replacing his
\nsenior economic advisor Widjojo Nitisastro, who moved up to the
\ncouncil's vice chairman's seat.<\/p>\n
Soeharto established and was the chairman of the council,
\nwhich was set up to oversee the implementation of the country's
\neconomic reform program.<\/p>\n
Ical said President B.J. Habibie appointed him in his capacity
\nas the chairman of Kadin. Ical, also the chairman of the
\ndiversified Bakrie Group, did not explain the reason behind the
\nappointment.<\/p>\n
The Salim Group is the largest business conglomerate in the
\ncountry, with interests ranging from agroindustry to the banking
\nsector.<\/p>\n
Its giant bank, Bank Central Asia, was taken over by the
\nIndonesian Bank Restructuring Agency Thursday, following massive
\nwithdrawals that dried up its reserves.<\/p>\n
The group is widely known to have received business privileges
\nfrom the government during the 32 years of the Soeharto regime
