Bakin warns public about antigovernment movements<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State Intelligence Coordinating Board (Bakin)
\nchief Lt. Gen. (ret) Moetojib warned yesterday that
\nantigovernment movements would intensify their efforts to disturb
\nnext year's presidential election.<\/p>\n
Moetojib hoped the public would not be influenced by those
\nmovements to disturb the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR)
\nsession, held next March to elect a new president and vice
\npresident and to adopt the new State Policy Guidelines.<\/p>\n
"I hope their groups will be not large enough -- it will
\ndepend on the people themselves whether they want to be provoked
\nor not," Moetojib said after meeting with President Soeharto at
\nMerdeka Palace yesterday.<\/p>\n
Soeharto is widely expected to be renominated for his seventh
\nconsecutive term for the 1998\/2003 period, although he has not
\nclearly expressed his readiness. Growing speculation is more on
\nwho will be the next vice president.<\/p>\n
Responding to Golkar's statement Sunday that it had decided to
\nrenominate him for another term, Soeharto said: "I could be
\naccused of obstructing succession ... I could also be accused of
\nbeing a complacent Golkar cadre, being a president for six terms
\nand now wanting a seventh term."<\/p>\n
Soeharto, who turned 76 last June, then asked the nation to
\nconsider their support for his renomination, saying that there
\nwere five months left for the people to make up their mind.<\/p>\n
Incumbent Vice President Try Sutrisno, State Minister of
\nResearch and Technology B.J. Habibie and Armed Forces Commander
\n(ABRI) Gen. Feisal Tanjung have been mentioned as possible
\ncandidates, as well as State Minister of National Development
\nPlanning Ginandjar Kartasasmita and Minister of Information R.
\nHartono.<\/p>\n
Moetojib said ABRI and Bakin have identified antigovernment
\ngroups, including radical groups, in Central and East Java.<\/p>\n
However, he said they would not be arrested unless there was
\nstrong evidence that they violated the law.<\/p>\n
Diponegoro Military Commander Maj. Gen. Mardiyanto said in
\nYogyakarta Thursday that certain radical groups calling
\nthemselves "pro-democracy movements" were operating in
\nYogyakarta, Pekalongan, Surakarta and other cities in Central
\nJava.<\/p>\n
"These groups demand radical changes," he said when briefing
\nmembers of the Yogyakarta legislative council during a special
\nplenary session. Diponegoro Command covers the Central Java
\nprovince and Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
"They also use all necessary means, including (exploiting)
\nscholars and the press to discredit the government," Mardiyanto
\nremarked.<\/p>\n
Three ABRI members will face a tribunal for allegedly
\norganizing illegal military exercises in the East Java town of
\nMalang, ABRI spokesman Brig. Gen. A. Wahab Mokodongan said last
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
They are identified as Lt. Col. Kunandar of the Artillery
\nTraining Center in Cimahi, West Java; Sgt. Maj. Suripto, a
\nlogistics staff member at the Army Strategic Reserves Command's
\nsecond division; and First Sgt. Ekpriadi of the Navy
\nHeadquarters' data center.<\/p>\n
They were allegedly part of a group of about 100 followers of
\nArief Kusno Saputro, who claimed to be the reincarnation of first
