The city administration will issue permits for Kancil to operate
\nin the capital as an alternative to Indian-made Bajaj (motorized
\npedicabs), which have been a form of public transportation here
\nsince the 1970s. The initial step -- to make redundant 14,000
\nBajaj -- makes some residents concerned over the fate of the
\nBajaj drivers. They share their views with The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n

\nSalemba, Central Jakarta. She lives in Kayu Jati, East Jakarta,

I agree with the idea. As a customer, I would like to travel
\nin more comfort. But in a vehicle like Bajaj, which can easily
\nmaneuver the streets.<\/p>\n
Bajaj are practical but so noisy. They need to be replaced
\nbecause I doubt they are roadworthy.<\/p>\n
Besides, the administration should have made a study of the
\nimplications of the new system, including the fate of the
\ndrivers.<\/p>\n

\nKelapa Gading, North Jakarta. She lives in Serdang Baru, Central

I always use Bajaj to go to work. They are quick and easily
\nnegotiate small streets.<\/p>\n
In a way, I hate the experience because the drivers tend to be
\ncareless. Only God (and the driver) knows where the vehicle will
\ngo.<\/p>\n
The idea to replace Bajaj is a relief. I hope I will have a
\nmore relaxing journey in a Kancil. But I wonder if I will have to
\nshare Kancil with other passengers.<\/p>\n
I feel sorry for Bajaj drivers. They will lose their jobs. I
\nreally don't like Sutiyoso, he doesn't care about people with low
\nincomes.<\/p>\n

I welcome the launching of Kancil. As a regular customer, I
\nwould like more comfortable transportation. But, what about the

Bajaj have been pretty good all things considered, because

What will happen to the thousands of Bajaj drivers once their
\nvehicles are taken off the streets?<\/p>\n
