'Bajaj' passenger wounds driver<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A bajaj (three-wheeled motorized pedicab) driver
\nsuffered thigh and severe hand wounds after a passenger slashed
\nhim with a sharp weapon in a fare dispute in Cempaka Baru,
\nCentral Jakarta, early on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Local police identified the driver as Ahmad Jaelani, 25, a
\nresident of Jl. Haji Ung in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, who
\nbecame involved in an altercation with Noval Ashar, 27, of Jl.
\nSumur Batu Raya in Cempaka Baru.<\/p>\n
Ahmad, whose fingers on one hand were nearly severed, is
\nundergoing treatment at the Islamic Hospital in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to the preliminary police investigation, Noval asked
\nAhmad, who was waiting for passengers at Kemayoran market, to
\ndrive him to his home at about 1 a.m.<\/p>\n
"No tariff was agreed upon when the passenger got into the
\nvehicle," city police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis said.<\/p>\n
After a 30-minute drive through the deserted streets, Ahmad
\nstopped his vehicle near Noval's house.<\/p>\n
Noval handed over some money for the ride, but the bajaj
\ndriver was dissatisfied. He said the amount was far less than the
\n"usual" for the distance, the officer said.<\/p>\n
Lubis could not clarify on the amount Noval paid nor the
\namount demanded by the driver.<\/p>\n
"Ahmad insisted the passenger should give him more money but
\nNoval refused," the officer said.<\/p>\n
Noval then pulled out a sharp weapon, of a type yet to be
\nidentified, and threatened Ahmad.<\/p>\n
"First they only argued about the unsettled fare but after
\nNoval took out his weapon, Ahmad challenged him to a fight,"
\nLubis said.<\/p>\n
Police are looking into the possibility Noval was drunk, Lubis
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
