        "content": "<p>Bajaj, bemo to be phased out<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will slowly phase out<br>\nall  three-wheel public vehicles in Jakarta because they are no<br>\nlonger classified as viable means for city transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the City Traffic and Land Transportation Agency JP<br>\nSepang told reporters at City Hall yesterday that the bajaj and<br>\nbemo are not appropriate for transporting passengers around the<br>\ncity.<\/p>\n<p>\"The three types of public transportation vehicles are not<br>\nincluded on the city's public transportation list,\" Sepang said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that their elimination will be carried out gradually<br>\nand the first victim will be the bemo. At present a total of<br>\n1,096 bemo are registered by the office.<\/p>\n<p>\"The city administration plans to replace those vehicles with<br>\nfour wheelers, such as minivans,\" Sepang said without going into<br>\ndetail.<\/p>\n<p>Sepang also said that the problem caused by these nuisances is<br>\ncomplicated and not easy to solve. He said that after the bemo,<br>\nthe office will sweep every last bajaj off the streets.<\/p>\n<p>An official of the Ministry of Transportation on Tuesday urged<br>\nthe city administration to do away with ojek, motorcycle taxis,<br>\nsaying that it is illegal and does not comply with Traffic Law<br>\nNo. 14\/1992.<\/p>\n<p>The city government banned the operation of the becak in<br>\nresidential areas a few years ago on the grounds that the three-<br>\nwheel pedicabs are not humane.<\/p>\n<p>Tadjus Sobirin, the head of the Jakarta chapter of the Golkar<br>\nruling party, told reporters yesterday that it is not humane to<br>\neliminate the ojek because many people need them.<\/p>\n<p>\"I don't agree with plans to eliminate ojek from the city<br>\nbecause this kind of transportation is very helpful for many<br>\npeople in residential areas,\" Tadjus said.<\/p>\n<p>Sepang said that Governor Surjadi Soedirdja has agreed with<br>\nthe plan.
