"summary": "The Indonesian government is preparing to implement a 20% bioethanol blend fuel, known as E20, by 2028 to reduce reliance on fossil-based fuels and strengthen national energy security. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia highlighted the country's abundant raw materials like sugarcane, corn, and cassava, drawing parallels to the successful biodiesel programme. This initiative is expected to boost the agricultural sector and promote energy independence, with initial imports possible to meet demand while domestic production ramps up.",
"content": "<p>JAKARTA - The government is refining plans for the implementation of\na 20% bioethanol blend fuel, or E20, targeted to take effect in 2028.\nThis policy is being prepared as part of efforts to reduce dependence on\nfossil-based fuels while strengthening the foundation of national energy\nresilience. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia\nstated that the step is not without basis, but draws from the success of\nthe biodiesel programme in the diesel sector, which is seen as capable\nof curbing imports while stimulating domestic industry. Indonesia itself\nis considered to have strong potential for developing bioethanol. The\nraw materials are relatively abundant, ranging from sugarcane, corn, to\ncassava, which are spread across various regions. If managed optimally,\nthe programme will not only impact energy but also open economic\nopportunities in the agricultural sector. Nevertheless, the government\nis not ruling out imports to meet initial needs. This option is\npositioned as a temporary solution while enhancing domestic production\ncapacity. Based on initial calculations, the bioethanol requirement to\nsupport E20 is estimated to reach 8 million kilolitres in 2028. This\nfigure is quite significant compared to current fuel imports, which are\nstill around 20 million kilolitres. Bahlil emphasised that the plan has\nundergone various stages of technical studies. Moreover, several\ncountries such as India, Thailand, and the United States have already\nadopted similar policies beforehand. Thus, the implementation of E20 is\nhoped to become one of the government\u2019s concrete strategies in promoting\nenergy self-sufficiency while creating a more sustainable energy\necosystem in Indonesia.<\/p>",
