Bahari Museum rearranged<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The marine collections at the Bahari Museum in
\ndowntown Kota, West Jakarta, were officially opened in a new
\ndisplay format yesterday by R.S. Museno, the deputy governor in
\ncharge of social welfare.<\/p>\n
The marine collections have been arranged chronologically and
\ngrouped according to fisherman community, fish-catching
\ntechnology, boat-making technology, marine wildlife, Jakarta as a
\nharbor during the period between 1600 and 1800, the voyage of
\nsteam ships and the Indonesian Navy.<\/p>\n
Dhermawan Ilyas, the museum's head, said that the new
\narrangement should make the collections more interesting and
\ninformative.<\/p>\n
The museum management has been working with the Amsterdam
\nHistorical Museum in the Netherlands as well as students from the
\nUniversity of Indonesia's Archeology Department and Trisakti
\nUniversity's Graphics Design Department since last January.<\/p>\n
Dhermawan said the 850 collections displayed at the museum
\ninclude original boats, boat models, modern ship miniatures,
\nnavigation equipment, traditional fish-catching equipment,
\nPortuguese and Dutch cannons from 16th through 18th centuries,
\nIndonesian naval equipment as well as pictures of the country's
\nsea-related activities.<\/p>\n
In addition, there is an early 20th century model of the
\nTanjung Priok harbor. The model was a gift from the Amsterdam
\nHistorical Museum handed over during yesterday's opening
\nceremony.<\/p>\n
The museum was once used by Dutch colonial rulers as a site to
\nstore spices.<\/p>\n
The building, which was constructed in 1718, was dedicated as
\nthe Bahari Museum in 1977.(32)<\/p>",
