BAGOC to learn from SEA Games<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Free spectator entry and incentives for world
\nrecord breaking athletes are two of the features of the SEA Games
\nwhich the Bangkok Asian Games Organizing Committee (BAGOC) said
\nit might adopt when it hosts the continent's premier sporting
\nevent.<\/p>\n
BAGOC marketing director Santiparb Tejavanija said these were
\nsome of the \"various good points\" which could be used in next
\nDecember's Games.<\/p>\n
\"All the sports are free for all the people,\" he said. \"Even
\nthough someone may not like sports, he or she can come to the
\nevent and enjoy the games,\" he added.<\/p>\n
To gain entry to many sports people have only been required to
\nshow stickers bought while paying utility bills in the last six
\nmonths.<\/p>\n
Santiparb also said that the hosts were promising to present
\nadditional material rewards to athletes who broke world records.<\/p>\n
\"This kind of incentive is good,\" he remarked, adding that it
\ncould help boost athletes' performances.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the preparations for the Asian Games, Santiparb
\nsaid 379 gold medals in 36 sports would be contested.<\/p>\n
Both he and Chetta Thanajaro, the chairman of the Thai Olympic
\ncommittee, stressed that preparations were underway and would be
\ncomplete well before the Games begins.<\/p>\n
Irian Jaya<\/p>\n
At a separate press conference the chairman of the Indonesian
\nAthletics Association, Mohammd \"Bob\" Hasan, said a synthetic
\ntrack would be built in Timika, Irian Jaya, to further the
\ndevelopment of the sport in the province.<\/p>\n
He said the development, including dormitories for athletes
\nand coaches, would cost about Rp 250 million (US$ 70,000) and be
\nfunded by the private sector.<\/p>\n
Bob also thanked PT Freeport for its contribution to sports
\ndevelopment in the Irian Jaya. The mining giant sponsored the
\n1997 provincial championships and is expected to be the main
\nfunder for next year's event. (04)<\/p>",
