Bagir sheds light on colleague's murder<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chief Justice Bagir Manan hinted at new findings
\non Friday which may lead to the solving of the murder of his
\ncolleague Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, but declined to reveal them on
\nthe grounds that the case under investigation.<\/p>\n
\"We've submitted all of the findings to the police,\" he said
\nin a meeting with members of the Coalition of Non-Governmental
\nOrganizations Against Corruption and Violence at his office.<\/p>\n
Bagir said that the police would guard each residence of the
\nSupreme Court justices and provide them with protection both
\ninside and outside the office.<\/p>\n
\"Each justice is now allowed to possess a firearm for self-
\nprotection,\" he said.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the coalition members expressed their
\nsupport for the justices and urged them not to fear any threats
\nthat may hamper their duties in upholding law and justice. The
\nhighest judicial body demonstrated its courage lately in sending
\nbig alleged corruptors of the New Order government to jail.<\/p>\n
The coalition includes, among others, Indonesian Corruption
\nWatch (ICW), Institute for Economic Studies, Indonesian Legal Aid
\nInstitute Foundation (YLBHI) and the Center for Legal and Human
\nRights Advocacy (PAHAM).<\/p>\n
Justices have been provided with tighter security following
\nthe fatal shooting of Syafiuddin on his way to the office on July
\n26 morning by unidentified gunmen.<\/p>\n
Syafiuddin was one of the panel of justices, who sentenced
\nformer president Soeharto's son Hutomo \"Tommy\" Mandala Putra and
\ntimber tycoon Mohamad \"Bob\" Hasan to jail.<\/p>\n
As junior justice for general crimes, Syafiuddin was also
\nappointed as the leader of a working group to establish the ad
\nhoc human rights tribunal.<\/p>\n
Supreme Court justices have requested permission to carry
\nfirearms.<\/p>\n
Separately on Thursday, Justice Benyamin Mangkoedilaga said no
\none will harm them if the justices only issue rulings which \"do
\nnot hurt anyone's feelings\".<\/p>\n
\"It means, rulings must be based on considerations that are
\nclear and honest,\" he told journalists. (bby)<\/p>",
