The Badung Regency Government has initiated a trial for a Car Free Day (CFD) programme on Jalan Teuku Umar Barat in Bali. The initiative aims to provide public space for wellness activities and create economic opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The first trial of the Car Free Day (CFD) was conducted on Jalan
Teuku Umar Barat, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta, Badung, Bali, on Sunday
(30/08/2026). The trial was organised by the Badung Regency
Government.

The CFD trial took place from 06:00 to 08:00 WITA on the stretch of
Jalan Teuku Umar Barat, spanning from the Bali Kiddy School area to the
Jalan Tangkuban Perahu traffic light. Traffic flowing from Denpasar
towards Badung was diverted via Jalan Persada and Jalan Tangkuban Perahu
during the trial period.

The Regent of Badung, I Wayan Adi Arnawa, stated that the location
was deemed strategic for a CFD as it could provide space for the public
to exercise while simultaneously opening opportunities for micro, small,
and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“I see that from a layout perspective, this is very strategic.
Firstly, it provides space for the community to engage in wellness and
sporting activities. Secondly, there is an opportunity for our MSMEs,”
said Adi Arnawa when met at the CFD site on Sunday (30/08/2026).

According to Adi Arnawa, the CFD could also serve as an alternative
open space for the local community, as available green open spaces in
the area are considered limited.

“On the other hand, the public can also enjoy the area more freely.
After all, from what I observe, it is very difficult to find green open
spaces around here,” added the former Badung Regional Secretary.

Nevertheless, Adi Arnawa noted that several aspects still require
improvement. The Badung Regency Government plans to renovate several
buildings deemed slum-like around the location and is studying the
widening of pedestrian walkways. The Badung Environmental and
Cleanliness Agency (DLHK) has been instructed to beautify the area to
make it more suitable as a public space.

“We will widen the pedestrian paths further as there is still space
available for us to do so. I have also instructed the Head of the DLHK
to carry out beautification in the future, so that this place truly
becomes a worthy location for strolling and exercising,” said Adi
Arnanya.

Regarding MSMEs, Adi Arnawa mentioned that the number of stalls to be
placed in the CFD area will depend on the final confirmed length of the
road segment used. The Badung Regency Government also ensured that no
fees will be charged to MSME operators for setting up stalls at the
location.

Adi Arnawa emphasised that the Badung Regency Government will
continue to conduct evaluations before establishing the event as a
regular activity. “If this is finalised, works well, and there are no
further issues, I will establish that we will hold Car Free Day here
every Sunday,” he explained.

In addition to the CFD, Adi Arnawa also opened the possibility of
using the area as a venue for New Year’s Eve celebrations, providing an
alternative option for year-end festivities beyond the coastal
areas.
",
