Baduis bracing for rituals<\/p>\n
BANTEN, West Java: Badui tribal people in Banten, West Java,
\nare preparing for their annual traditional rituals.<\/p>\n
As the harvest season is nearing, Badui tribal people in the
\nhinterland of Kenekes, Cibeo and Cikeusik, are fasting and
\nclosing areas to outsiders, including government officials.<\/p>\n
They will fast, a part of their rituals called Kawalu, until
\nit is time for them to harvest their paddy fields and forests.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the Banten regency government Tony Fatony told
\nAntara Saturday the religious ritual would end with people
\noffering agricultural products to the regent.<\/p>\n
They will visit the regent to report on their home soil's
\n"prosperity" and "stability". Usually they offer the regent
\ncoconuts, palm sugar, glutinous rice, bananas and handicrafts.<\/p>\n
The Badui people in Banten, about 100 kilometers west of
\nJakarta, preserve their "primitive" culture proudly. They travel
\non foot and are renown for their honesty.<\/p>\n
"It has never been heard that they steal or cheat others,"
\nTony said.<\/p>\n
A police officer in Lebak said they are not worried that the
\nBadui refuse to obtain identity cards "because they are highly
\ncivilized and of high integrity".<\/p>\n
"We have not heard of Baduis stealing, robbing, torturing or
\ncommitting any other crimes," he told Antara.<\/p>\n
Last year, West Java military commander Maj. Gen. Tayo Tarmadi
