        "content": "<p>Badminton star dominate Best Athlete nominations<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Badminton stars dominate the list of nominees<br>\nfor the 1996 Best Athlete competition run by the Jakarta Chapter<br>\nof the Sports Journalists Association.<\/p>\n<p>In a meeting Tuesday, the association announced that the top<br>\nawards are expected to be handed over to shuttlers and top<br>\nbadminton officials, Antara news agency reported yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Ricky Subagdja and Rexy Mainaky, gold medalists at the Atlanta<br>\nOlympics, were chosen for the best athlete in the men&apos;s division.<br>\nThe other candidates are GM Utut Adianto (chess), Ade Rai<br>\n(bodybuilding), Sutrisno (powerlifting) and Hengky Lasut and Eddy<br>\nMonoppo (bridge).<\/p>\n<p>In the women&apos;s division, the nominees for 1996 Best Athlete<br>\nincluded badminton players Mia Audina and Susi Susanti, and also<br>\nCatherine Surya and Elsa Manora (both swimmers), Yayuk Basuki<br>\n(tennis), Upi Damayanti Thamin (chess) and Sri Indriyani (weight<br>\nlifting).<\/p>\n<p>The Thomas and Uber Cups teams were nominated as the Best Team<br>\nfor 1996, followed by the men&apos;s bridge team and women&apos;s chess<br>\nteam.<\/p>\n<p>Badminton coaches Christian Hadinata and Atik Jauhari, were<br>\nselected as the Best Coaches, along with Retno Kustiah, a women&apos;s<br>\nbadminton coach and Imron Rosadi, a heavyweight coach from<br>\nLampung.<\/p>\n<p>Announcement<\/p>\n<p>The election of Best Athlete has become an annual event for<br>\nthe association. The announcement and presentation of awards will<br>\ntake place in mid-February.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hermensen Ballo, a national boxer from East Nusa<br>\nTenggara, was chosen as the best boxer during the Golden Glove<br>\nBoxing Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Ballo, who is being trained for the forthcoming SEA Games, won<br>\nthe award after defeating his close rival La Paene Masara on<br>\npoints in the match which ended Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ballo received a training fund of Rp 1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Although Dedi Mikaso from Bogor lost to Otong Kokasih on<br>\npoints, his good performances earned him the favorite boxer<br>\ntitle. He received a certificate plus Rp 1 million in training<br>\nfunds. Bara Gomies from Maluku received Rp 500,000 after<br>\ndefeating Amri Yusran. (lnt)<\/p>",
