Badminton star dominate Best Athlete nominations<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Badminton stars dominate the list of nominees
\nfor the 1996 Best Athlete competition run by the Jakarta Chapter
\nof the Sports Journalists Association.<\/p>\n
In a meeting Tuesday, the association announced that the top
\nawards are expected to be handed over to shuttlers and top
\nbadminton officials, Antara news agency reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Ricky Subagdja and Rexy Mainaky, gold medalists at the Atlanta
\nOlympics, were chosen for the best athlete in the men's division.
\nThe other candidates are GM Utut Adianto (chess), Ade Rai
\n(bodybuilding), Sutrisno (powerlifting) and Hengky Lasut and Eddy
\nMonoppo (bridge).<\/p>\n
In the women's division, the nominees for 1996 Best Athlete
\nincluded badminton players Mia Audina and Susi Susanti, and also
\nCatherine Surya and Elsa Manora (both swimmers), Yayuk Basuki
\n(tennis), Upi Damayanti Thamin (chess) and Sri Indriyani (weight
\nlifting).<\/p>\n
The Thomas and Uber Cups teams were nominated as the Best Team
\nfor 1996, followed by the men's bridge team and women's chess
\nteam.<\/p>\n
Badminton coaches Christian Hadinata and Atik Jauhari, were
\nselected as the Best Coaches, along with Retno Kustiah, a women's
\nbadminton coach and Imron Rosadi, a heavyweight coach from
\nLampung.<\/p>\n
Announcement<\/p>\n
The election of Best Athlete has become an annual event for
\nthe association. The announcement and presentation of awards will
\ntake place in mid-February.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Hermensen Ballo, a national boxer from East Nusa
\nTenggara, was chosen as the best boxer during the Golden Glove
\nBoxing Championship.<\/p>\n
Ballo, who is being trained for the forthcoming SEA Games, won
\nthe award after defeating his close rival La Paene Masara on
\npoints in the match which ended Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Ballo received a training fund of Rp 1.5 million.<\/p>\n
Although Dedi Mikaso from Bogor lost to Otong Kokasih on
\npoints, his good performances earned him the favorite boxer
\ntitle. He received a certificate plus Rp 1 million in training
\nfunds. Bara Gomies from Maluku received Rp 500,000 after
\ndefeating Amri Yusran. (lnt)<\/p>",
