Badminton coaches to have contract system<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI)
\nplans to employ a contract system for coaches at the Indonesian
\nBadminton Center in Cipayung, East Jakarta, as a way to improve
\nthe performance of the coaches.<\/p>\n
PBSI secretary-general Leo Chandra Wiranata said on Monday the
\nsystem will become effective on Feb. 1, the same day the
\nassociation announces which coaches and players have been invited
\nto join the center.<\/p>\n
\"Since the tenure of the current officials will end by the end
\nof this year, we will offer one-year contracts. The contracts
\nwill contain the responsibility of the coaches, targets for their
\nplayers, the punishments if they fail (to meet these targets) and
\nrewards for their success,\" Leo said.<\/p>\n
Between eight and 10 coaches will be recruited to the center,
\nless than the current 13. Women's singles coach Retno Kustiyah,
\nher assistant Lani and women's doubles coach Imelda Wigoeno
\nsubmitted their resignations late last year.<\/p>\n
The criteria for potential coaches are leadership, self-
\nconfidence, discipline, performance and character. They also must
\nhave a coaching certificate from PBSI, experience in coaching at
\nthe club level and the ability to arrange training programs, and
\nit is preferable if they are former athletes.<\/p>\n
Leo hinted that some of the current coaches would remain at
\nthe center, but he declined to identify them. He also said PBSI
\nwould hire a full-time physical trainer to improve the physical
\nfitness of athletes.<\/p>\n
Currently, PBSI only retains a physical trainer weeks before
\nmajor events, including the Thomas and Uber cups, the Sudirman
\nCup, the World Championships and the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
Leo declined to provide the salary range of the coaches.<\/p>\n
PBSI currently does not employ coaches on a contract basis,
\nnor does it state in writing the responsibilities or targets of
\nthe coaches.<\/p>\n
Leo also said PBSI would likely reduce the number of players
\nat the center to 38 from 56.<\/p>\n
He also said that scheduled for discussion at PBSI's annual
\ncongress in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, this weekend was the
\npossibility of establishing the badminton center as an
\nindependent body outside of the PBSI, with the center's training
\ndirector, Christian Hadinata, made directly responsible to PBSI
\nchairman Subagyo Hadisiswoyo.<\/p>\n
\"This would merely be to place the focus on the training
\nprogram. We will try it for the remaining period. If it fails,
