JAKARTA (JP): Everybody nowadays is getting back to something.
\nReligious organizations are returning to their old philosophies.
\nThe military is getting back to basics. Music lovers are tuning
\nin to the 1960s, bringing a fortune to recording companies
\nreproducing oldies in the millions. Engelbert Humperdink and
\nJulio Iglesias are back on track as their songs are on the
\nIndonesian market again. Karaoke places are dominated by old
\nsongs such as Falling in Love, My Way and Teluk Bayur.<\/p>\n
In the back-to-something phenomenon, the most popular phrase
\nis back to nature. Indonesians are taken by anything claimed to
\nbe natural. They eat natural food, drink water advertised as
\nnatural spring water, and live in natural surroundings.<\/p>\n
Natural is big business. Real estate companies sell expensive
\nhouses they allege have natural atmospheres. \"Use our products
\nand have natural beauty,\" screams a cosmetic company. A food-
\nproducing company asserts that their product contains natural
\nfiber. A slimming center advertisers its ability to make you
\nslimmer in a natural way.<\/p>\n
What does natural mean, anyway?<\/p>\n
Most dictionaries describe natural as free from artificiality
\nand affectation; present in or made by nature. This denotes that
\nnatural beauty is beauty without the slightest touch of
\ncosmetics. Natural water should be from the nearest spring
\nwithout preservatives being added at a factory.<\/p>\n
Now, take a look at these natural things. If you want a girl
\nwith real natural beauty, you'll have to search in a remote area
\nnot touched by the marketing people. That is almost impossible,
\nwhat with the high mobility of people and the improvement in
\ncommunications.<\/p>\n
For natural surroundings, you will have to find a virgin
\njungle. The surroundings advertised by real estate agents turn
\nout to be a concrete swimming pool, semi-paved roads, potted
\nplants, and an artificial waterfall thrown in for good measure.<\/p>\n
Try asking for natural vitamins at a dispensary. You'll
\nreceive factory made tablets. The advertised natural fiber is
\nfound in health drinks made in a factory by mixing various
\nsubstances. Natural water is taken from one of Indonesia's
\ngrossly polluted rivers, treated at a water plant and then
\nbottled in a factory.<\/p>\n
When I asked an attendant at a slimming center that claims to
\n\"make you slimmer in natural way\", if the diet food they
\nsuggested was made in a factory, she answered casually, \"Yes,
\nsir. Naturally.\"<\/p>\n
