BABA program here at Universitas INDONUSA Esa Unggul<\/p>\n
In this monetary crisis time, many Indonesians are looking
\ncloser to home to meet their educational needs on a budget they
\ncan afford. For most, it has been a choice forced upon them.
\nDreams of a foreign university degree have been destroyed by the
\ndiminishing value of the rupiah and the resulting higher costs of
\npaying for tuition fees and accommodation.<\/p>\n
Some may be downhearted, fearing local educational
\nopportunities will not rank with their foreign equivalent and put
\nthem at a disadvantage for their future.<\/p>\n
It is a fear understood -- and solved -- by the University of
\nINDONUSA Esa Unggul, which now offers special, international BABA
\nin Business Administration (Bachelor of Art in Business
\nAdministration) courses under the Faculty of Economics majoring
\nin Management.<\/p>\n
The university also boasts the Faculty of Technology with a
\nmajor in Industrial Technology and Planning and Urban Development
\nTechnology, the Faculty of Public Health for Health Information,
\nwhich is the only one in Indonesia, besides the Management of
\nPhysiotherapy, which is the first one in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Faculty of Law, which will be open next September, will
\nconcentrate on International Business Law, and its Faculty of
\nSocial and Political Science will specialize in International
\nPublic Relations.<\/p>\n
According to Michael Goodwin, Director of the BABA Program at
\nINDONUSA, the program is priced competitively with the equivalent
\nforeign degrees. This can be achieved because of the low cost of
\nliving here in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Cooperating with the University of Wales, it is fully
\nvalidated by the British university. Goodwin also is quick to
\npoint out that it is fitted into the Indonesian educational
\nsystem accredited by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and
\nCulture. In fact, KAMPUS EMAS, INDONUSA is the only university in
\nIndonesia that offers a foreign degree for a course fully
\ncompleted in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"Validated by the University of Wales means that they check
\neverything that we do, to ensure that we meet the exacting
\nstandards set by them,\" said Goodwin at his office in KAMPUS
\nEMAS, located in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, a short distance from
\nthe capital's hub.<\/p>\n
A team from the University of Wales -- headed by an official
\nexternal administrator -- visits INDONUSA several times every
\nyear to give feedback on the program and verify that it is being
\nrun in compliance with the schools' agreement.<\/p>\n
Goodwin said the team \"often has comments for us, which, of
\ncourse, we take note of and change in the program.\" He added:
\n\"When they have conducted their inspection, they agree with our
\ndecisions and actions. That is, they validate them and eventually
\naward us their degrees.<\/p>\n
\"That means the degrees are British ones, and are exactly the
\nsame as those awarded to other students who attend any of the
\ncolleges of the University of Wales in the United Kingdom.\"<\/p>\n
Best business university for globalization<\/p>\n
Lecturers are from Britain, the U.S., Indonesia, Holland,
\nIndia and Australia, and all courses are conducted in English.
\nAll of the lecturers have practical experience in business,
\nbringing to the classroom practical experience in the business
\nworld.<\/p>\n
Goodwin believes the emphasis on English is essential in
\npreparing competent Indonesians who will be able to take
\nadvantage of business opportunities in the global community. All
\nthis makes Kampus Emas INDONUSA an international campus complete
\nwith students from 22 nationalities.<\/p>\n
\"This is one of our main aspects,\" Goodwin said. \"English is
\nthe language of business, of global communication. We are
\ntraining people who will be able to take their place at the
\nforefront of business supported by a Western-standard degree.\"<\/p>\n
Vice Rector Ir. Aziz Luthfi, M.Sc acknowledges that students
\nmay be initially reticent to express themselves in English, but
\nare aided by immersion in a two-semester English Foundation
\ncourse.<\/p>\n
Business vision<\/p>\n
Vice Rector Aziz said the program fits into INDONUSA's vision
\nto nurture Indonesians with the global span of business,
\ntechnological and information span of knowledge to compete in,
\nand to contribute to their country.<\/p>\n
\"This is something hoped for by the government from every
\ngraduate in Indonesia,\" said Aziz. \"The BABA degree is part of
\nthat goal, including its emphasis on English. We are confident
\nour graduates can communicate in English and it creates a
\nconducive atmosphere for others trying to master the language.\"<\/p>\n
Rector of Universitas INDONUSA Esa Unggul, Dra. Kemala Motik
\nAbdul Gafur, MM, wished to emphasize that the aim of the
\nuniversity is to educate the student to be able to become
\nresponsible business entrepreneurs that create jobs and
\nopportunity in this country, rich in natural and human resources.
\n\"INDONUSA Esa Unggul fully intends to be the best business
\nuniversity in the era of globalization,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Social skills<\/p>\n
Aziz and Goodwin emphasized the BABA degree was not about
\nchurning out talking heads who can spout facts and business
\ntheorems but are duds in the social department.<\/p>\n
\"The principal objective of the degree courses held at
\nINDONUSA is to help students to become responsible citizens in
\nthis global community in which we all live,\" Goodwin said. \"Of
\ncourse, their training is to help them to become competent and
\ncapable managers in an increasingly competitive environment. But,
\nalong with this, they are encouraged to develop their
\ninterpersonal skills for both their business and personal
\nfutures.\"<\/p>\n
He said INDONUSA's unique academic environment encouraged
\nstudents to realize their role in a shrinking global world -- and
\ncome to terms with cultural differences.<\/p>\n
\"By having a better understanding of international business,
\nas well as an appreciation of the customs and cultures of so many
\nother countries from around the world, our students are better
\nequipped to recognize the need for us all to accept the
\ndifferences that are important to different cultures,\" Goodwin
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Paramitha Ruly is one of those who have benefited from the
\nresponsibility delegated to students. She is an active member of
\nthe Student Council and editor of a new campus English-language
\npublication. \"We are encouraged to do what we want, to be
\nourselves,\" Paramitha said. \"We can be active in setting up
\ngroups, or following our own interests, and the administration is
\nvery receptive. I imagine it is very similar to the campuses
\nfound in foreign countries.\"<\/p>\n
Goodwin said the administration believes the years spent at
\nINDONUSA should be the grounding for setting students on the path
\nto a successful future. \"We believe that the friendships and
\nsocial bonds that students form in college are one of the most
\nimportant factors in determining their eventual success. Students
\nmust be encouraged to understand and accept responsibility from
\nan early stage in their careers. That is why the Student Council
\nof the BABA program at INDONUSA is empowered to organize
\nseminars, parties, outings, newsletters and more.\"<\/p>\n
He added it was not a traditionally distant relationship
\nbetween university committees and students. In fact, the Student
\nCouncil of the BABA program is treated more as junior members of
\nthe management team than as students. The students are
\nrepresented in nearly all of the various management committees
\nand their opinions are sought. \"After all, the management's
\ncontrol of the university is for the benefit of the students, so
\nit seems reasonable to seek and listen to their opinions,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
In one of the programs overseen by students, members of the
\nBABA program held a special get-together -- CAMPUS NIGHT -- on
\nApril 22, 1999, with alumni and faculty. Students wore
\ntraditional dress and performed together in a fashion show to
\ndisplay their unity.<\/p>\n
\"Naturally, we oversee the events, but we place our trust in
\nthem,\" said Goodwin. \"We are very pleased with their efforts.
\nJust think about what it takes to produce a magazine in English
\nwhen it is a foreign language for you.\"<\/p>\n
He brims with pride about the achievements of the students in
\nearning a degree, conducted in English but in their homeland,
\nwhich is of the same value as their peers in the West.<\/p>\n
Boyke Perdana Dadi Widiyanto, MBA, Director of PT Wisnu Tri
\nBuana Abadi, a trading house company, is one of INDONUSA's alumni
\nfor both the BABA and MBA program, said: \"My years in INDONUSA
\nhave taught me a lot and have prepared me for the era of
\nglobalization, both for my English and important knowledge of
\nbusiness.\"<\/p>\n
\"To be awarded a degree is difficult enough by itself, but to
\ndo it in another language is highly commendable,\" Goodwin said.
