Ba'asyir's detention extended for 40 days<\/p>\n

Prosecutors extended on Wednesday the detention of Muslim cleric
\nAbu Bakar Ba'asyir for another 40 days, saying they need more
\ntime to complete his case documents.<\/p>\n
National Police deputy spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo said on
\nWednesday the extension would become effective on Friday, when
\nBa'asyir's first detention period expires.<\/p>\n
\"We requested an extension of Ba'asyir's detention last week
\nfrom the Jakarta Prosecutors Office as his detention period which
\nbegan on Nov. 2 will expire on Nov. 22,\" Prasetyo said.<\/p>\n
He added that the police would not move Ba'asyir from the
\nRaden Said Soekanto Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta,
\nwhere he has been undergoing treatment since he was forcibly
\ntransferred from Muhammadiyah Hospital in the Central Java town
\nof Surakarta last month.<\/p>\n
The request for an extension of Ba'asyir's detention
\ncontradicted the police's previous statement that they were
\nprepared to submit the case files to the prosecutors in spite of
\nthe cleric's refusal to answer police questions.<\/p>\n
Ba'asyir, 64, the chairman of the Indonesian Mujahidin Council
\n(MMI) was accused of involvement in a series of bombings in 2000,
\nan immigration law violation and a plot to assassinate President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri in 1999. If convicted, Ba'asyir could face
\nthe death sentence.<\/p>\n
The court threw out a suit brought by Ba'asyir's last week
\nclaiming his arrest was unlawful.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ba'asyir's lawyer Ahmad Michdan said on Wednesday
\nthe extension of his client's detention did not surprise him.<\/p>\n
Ahmad said Ba'asyir's team of lawyers were preparing evidence
\nand witnesses to exonerate Ba'asyir.<\/p>\n
\"We have three credible witnesses from Malaysia and Indonesia
\nwho can testify accurately about Ustad Ba'asyir and refute all
\naccusations leveled against him,\" said Ahmad, declined to name
\nthe witnesses.<\/p>\n
Police will submit the case files to the prosecutors once they
\ncomplete all documents required, Prasetyo said without giving a
\ntime frame.<\/p>",
