        "content": "<p>Ba&apos;asyir to retain top post at MMI<\/p>\n<p>SURAKARTA, Central Java: The Indonesian Mujahidin Council<br>\n(MMI) will likely retain terror suspect Abu Bakar Ba&apos;asyir as its<br>\ntop leader during the militant group&apos;s ongoing three-day congress<br>\nhere, which ends on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Replacing Ustadz (teacher) Abu Bakar Ba&apos;asyir during the<br>\ncurrent situation would mean committing kezaliman (an act of<br>\nmistreatment) against him. All MMI members believe that he is an<br>\ninnocent man who is facing an unjust legal process,&quot; congress<br>\ncommittee chairman Farid Ma&apos;ruf said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Ba&apos;asyir has been prevented from attending the congress as he<br>\nis standing trial in Jakarta on charges of plotting to kill<br>\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri in 1999 and involvement in the<br>\nChristmas bombings in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Farid, also director of the Al Mukmin Islamic boarding school<br>\nin Ngruki, Surakarta, denied his school had connections with the<br>\nregional Jamaah Islamiyah terror network.<\/p>\n<p>Police have linked JI with last year&apos;s deadly bombings in Bali<br>\nand the recent bombing at the Marriott Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Asmar Latin Sani, the suspected suicide bomber at the<br>\nMarriott, was a graduate from Ngruki boarding school, police<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>However, Farid denied that his school, founded in 1972, taught<br>\nviolence to its students. --JP<\/p>",
