Ba'asyir sues Singapore government<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir has filed a Rp 1
\ntrillion ($US101 million) defamation and libel lawsuit against
\nthe Singapore government.<\/p>\n
The suit is in response to a press release from the Singapore
\nEmbassy in Indonesia indicating that Ba'asyir was a leader of a
\nregional extremist cell.<\/p>\n
Ba'asyir and his five lawyers filed the lawsuit at the South
\nJakarta District Court on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Lawyer M. Mahendradatta said his client was demanding the
\nmoney as moral compensation. He said the money would be used to
\nhelp victims of recent natural disasters in Indonesia and to
\npromote Islamic education.<\/p>\n
\"We are not asking the Singapore government for an apology
\nsince Ba'asyir has already forgiven them,\" Mahendradatta told The
\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Ba'asyir is not suing Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew
\nbecause he would have had to file the suit in Singapore.<\/p>\n
Last month, Lee said the leaders of regional extremist cells
\nremained at large in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The head of the South Jakarta District Court, Lalu Mariyun,
\nsaid judges would rule on whether the suit could proceed. -- JP<\/p>",
