JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The 50% biodiesel policy (B50), which is a\nmixture of 50% vegetable fuel based on palm oil (CPO) with 50% diesel,\nis scheduled to take effect on 1 July 2026.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that\nthe government is not only targeting subsidy savings from the B50 policy\nbut also opportunities to create a domestic diesel surplus.<\/p>\n
This step is considered by Airlangga to be part of a broader strategy\nto strengthen energy resilience while curbing import dependence.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn one year, or even in just six months, there will be savings from\nthe use of fossil fuels and also subsidy savings from biodiesel\nestimated to reach Rp 48 trillion,\u201d said Airlangga at the Palace on\nWednesday (8\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
The government is currently accelerating the energy transition by\nreducing reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n
From a technical readiness perspective, the government has assured\nthat B50 trials are nearly complete.<\/p>\n
On the same occasion, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources\n(ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia mentioned that testing has been conducted for\nnearly six months across various sectors.<\/p>\n
\u201cB50 has been trialled for almost six months on various equipment\nsuch as heavy machinery, ships, trains, and trucks. The trials are still\nongoing, but they will soon be finalised. Up to today, the results are,\nalhamdulillah, quite good. Starting 1 July, B50 will be implemented,\u201d\nsaid Bahlil.<\/p>\n
Interestingly, the implementation of B50 is also projected to\ntransform the domestic energy supply landscape.<\/p>\n
The government is optimistic that Indonesia can experience a surplus\nin diesel supply with the combination of the biodiesel programme and the\noperation of new refineries.<\/p>\n
\u201cI also convey that with the implementation of B50, insyaallah, this\nyear we will experience a diesel surplus. This is good news, especially\nafter the RDMP (Refinery Development Master Plan) in East Kalimantan\nbecomes operational,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Technically, Bahlil said, field trial results show that B50 has met\nvarious important parameters, such as oxidation stability, water\ncontent, and FAME standards.<\/p>\n
This confirms the readiness for implementation, particularly for\nnon-automotive sectors like mining that have high workloads.<\/p>\n
The B50 programme itself is a continuation of previous biodiesel\npolicies, namely B40, which has been implemented nationally since early\n2025.<\/p>\n
With this increase in blend ratio, Indonesia is further strengthening\nits position as one of the pioneering countries in large-scale\nutilisation of vegetable-based fuels.<\/p>\n
