        "content": "<p>Ayala gets water contract<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (Reuter): The Philippines awarded contracts for<br>\nManila&apos;s water distribution to two groups led by Ayala Corp and<br>\nBenpres Holdings Corp, state-agency Metropolitan Waterworks and<br>\nSewerage System (MWSS) said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>MWSS said in a statement that Public Works Secretary Gregorio<br>\nVigilar had signed the contracts with representatives of the<br>\nAyala and Benpres consortia.<\/p>\n<p>The government awarded the contracts to the winners of the<br>\nJanuary 23 MWSS bidding after the Court of Appeals lifted on<br>\nWednesday an order restraining President Fidel Ramos from<br>\nproceeding with the privatization of Manila&apos;s waterworks and<br>\nsewerage system.<\/p>\n<p>The government had offered two 25-year concessions to run the<br>\ncity&apos;s waterworks system.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium of Ayala, Bechtel Corp of the United States and<br>\nUnited Utilities Plc [UU.L] of Britain won the east zone<br>\nconcession. The west zone was won by Benpres with France&apos;s<br>\nLyonnaise des Eaux SA [LYOE.PA]<\/p>",
