        "content": "<p>Awarenes linked to miscarriages<\/p>\n<p>Leo Wahyudi S., The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Many expectant couples in the country lack proper<br>\nunderstanding of reproductive health issues, unaware of the<br>\nsevere long-term consequences for their still-unborn child.<\/p>\n<p>Obstetrician Hasnah Siregar lamented her experience with young<br>\ncouples, many of whom lacked awareness, with some even oblivious<br>\nto the necessity of recognizing practical health aspects.<\/p>\n<p>\"Young mothers now are simply not aware,\" Hasnah said, noting<br>\nthat many do not even have a personal record of their own state<br>\nof health.<\/p>\n<p>\"I am very disappointed about Indonesian women, who seem to be<br>\nunconcerned about their own menstrual periods,\" she remarked.<\/p>\n<p>\"It is no wonder that they then complain a lot about their<br>\npregnancies.\"<\/p>\n<p>On one hand they expected to bear intelligent babies, but they<br>\nwere actually ignorant of what to do during their pregnancy,<br>\nHasnah said during a seminar held at Siloam Gleneagles Hospital,<br>\ntitled How to Create an Intelligent Child.<\/p>\n<p>She also revealed the surprising results of a study, conducted<br>\nhere five years ago, which found that miscarried embryos were<br>\nfound in the menstrual blood of almost half of the women in the<br>\nsurvey.<\/p>\n<p>Without fully elaborating, Hasnah pointed to simple ignorance<br>\nand carelessness as being the root cause.<\/p>\n<p>During the seminar, another obstetrician, Dachrial Daud, urged<br>\nexpectant mothers to ensure they had enough rest, maintained<br>\nadequate nutrition and had a healthy lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>A favorable life environment would enable them to avoid<br>\nstressors, a factor that could lead to depression, he added.<\/p>\n<p>An often important, yet overlooked factor, is the role of the<br>\nfather.<\/p>\n<p>Dachrial underlined the role of the father in maintaining a<br>\nharmonious relationship with the expectant mother.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Hasnah pointed out that the relationship between<br>\nthe mother and father would already begin to influence the<br>\nemotional development of the embryo from the 16th week.<\/p>\n<p>She said healthy pregnancies were very much affected by<br>\nfavorable psychological factors from both parents.<\/p>\n<p>M. Louise, a psychologist who is deputy coordinator of the<br>\nParents Education Program at Harapan Kita Hospital, stressed the<br>\nsignificance of the psychological comfort and understanding given<br>\nby the father to the expectant mother.<\/p>\n<p>Only when there was no psychological irritation during<br>\npregnancy could an intelligent and emotionally healthy child be<br>\nborn, Louise said.<\/p>",
