Award for jailed reporter<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Ahmad Taufik, imprisoned former Tempo reporter,
\nis one of five journalists named for this year's Freedom Awards,
\nconferred by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists,
\nReuters reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Ahmad is currently serving a jail term after the Jakarta
\nDistrict Court found him guilty early this year of sowing hatred
\nagainst the government.<\/p>\n
He is the chairman of the Alliance of Independence Journalists
\n(AJI), an organization founded by former Tempo journalists and
\ntheir supporters in the wake of the government's ban against of
\nthe news magazine in June 1994. He was also editor of AJI's
\nbulletin Independen, which both the government and the court
\nfound offensive.<\/p>\n
Besides Ahmad, the award will be presented to Fred M'membe of
\nZambia, Veronica Guerin of Ireland, Yvgeny Kiselyov of Russia
\nand Jose Ruben Zamora Marroquin of Guatemala.<\/p>\n
The committee, currently headed by Ted Turner, chairman of
\nTurner Broadcasting System, monitors abuses of press freedom.<\/p>",
