Various competitions, from cracker eating contests to sack races and\nother prize-winning games, are commonly held as entertainment to enliven\nthe Independence Day atmosphere. However, Muslims need to pay attention\nto the mechanisms of a game or competition so that it does not contain\nelements of gambling, which is forbidden in Sharia.<\/p>\n

KH Ahmad Sarwat Lc, on the Rumah Fiqih page, explained that a game or\ncontract becomes prohibited gambling if four criteria are met.<\/p>\n

  1. There Are Two Betting Parties<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It is not considered gambling if only one party places a bet. There\nmust be at least two parties. For example, if I challenge you to an\narm-wrestling match and I provide a prize of Rp 100,000 if you manage to\nbeat me, but you do not bet anything, so if you lose you will not lose\nany property. This arm-wrestling match is not gambling because only one\nparty is betting.<\/p>\n

    1. The Wager Is in the Form of Property<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      It is not considered gambling if what is wagered is not property.\nProperty can take various forms, such as money, valuable objects like\ngold, silver, watches, bracelets, necklaces, jewellery, houses, land,\nvehicles, or securities. Even services that have a certain value are\nincluded. However, if what is at stake is not property, such as betting\nto get the front row in prayer by drawing lots as mentioned in the\nProphetic hadith, then that drawing of lots is not considered\ngambling.<\/p>\n

      1. There Is a Competition or Draw That Determines Winning and\nLosing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        In Arabic, this criterion is called mughalabah, which is a bet\ninvolving winning and losing. Its form can be a draw that relies purely\non luck, or it can involve thinking, intelligence, intellectual ability,\nand so on. The point of contention here is not the draw or the luck, but\nthe existence of a winner and a loser. How the winner is determined has\nno connection whatsoever with the ruling on gambling.<\/p>\n

        1. The Winner Has the Right to Take the Loser\u2019s Property<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Finally, the decisive factor in the ruling on gambling is this last\ncriterion, which is the stipulation that the winning party has the right\nto take the property wagered by the losing party. The losing party must\nbe willing and sincere in losing their property. If these four\nconditions in a game or contract are met, it is officially ruled as\ngambling, which is forbidden by Sharia.<\/p>\n

          Thus, the festivities of Independence Day competitions can remain a\nmeans of entertainment while strengthening community brotherhood, as\nlong as the implementation does not contain elements of gambling. The\nMuslim community must ensure that prizes and competition mechanisms do\nnot come from the property of losing participants or cause participants\nto wager their property.
