Indonesia is facing a new problem following Malaysia's claim
\nof the Ambalat Block in the Sulawesi Sea, which according to the
\ndirectorate general of oil and gas at the Ministry of Energy and
\nMineral Resources, has rich oil and gas deposits.<\/p>\n
The Ambalat area is estimated to contain from 700 million to
\none billion barrels of crude oil and over 40 trillion cubic feet
\nof gas. Malaysia made the claim through its Petronas oil company,
\nwhich on Feb. 16 gave a concession to British-Dutch giant Shell
\nto exploit the block.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government rejected the claim because this
\ncountry had earlier controlled the offshore territory and given
\noil\/gas concessions to the Italian ENI and U.S. Linocal
\ncompanies.<\/p>\n
With both nations preparing their military forces in the
\ndisputed area and a lot of Indonesians enrolling as civilian
\nmilitia volunteers, an open war is likely. However, we should be
\nwise when dealing with this issue and avoid an emotional
\nreaction, while remembering that we as neighbors are
\npredominantly Muslim countries.<\/p>\n
Any physical confrontation should be prevented, otherwise
\nregional instability will follow, which invites foreign
\nintervention. If a conflict is protracted, the zone will be
\nsubjected to foreign control under the UN or an international
\ncourt.<\/p>\n
