Authorities threatened over renegade discos<\/p>\n
TANGERANG, West Java (JP): A leader from Tangerang's Moslem
\ncommunity demanded yesterday that authorities close down three
\nnightspots soon, vowing he would organize another street
\ndemonstration should no action be taken.<\/p>\n
Edy Sulaeman, leader of Saturday's demonstration involving
\nmore than 1,000 Moslems, said that one establishment has been
\nused as a brothel, one for drug and Ecstasy trafficking and a
\nthird venue featured \"impolite\" singers.<\/p>\n
He referred to FM 3 Transit Hotel on Jl. MH. Thamrin, Model
\nDiscotheque on Jl. Merdeka and Singapore Karaoke Singing Hall on
\nJl. Gatot Subroto. He said that those places could impair and
\nruin the young generation's morality.<\/p>\n
\"I won't be afraid of whatever risks are ahead,\" Edy said,
\nquoting a verse from the Koran.<\/p>\n
He accused the hotel's owner of providing prostitutes to
\nvisitors, saying that the hotel was being used as a brothel.<\/p>\n
He also demanded that the Model Discotheque be shut down
\neither by the owner or the authorities, as it was used by
\nyoungsters to enjoy Ecstasy pills.<\/p>\n
He also blamed the Singapore Karaoke for featuring striptease
\ndancers and other improperly clad singers wearing only underwear.<\/p>\n
The mayor, Djakaria Machmud, when asked to comment on
\nSaturday's demonstration, briefly replied: \"We'll just wait and
\nsee.\" He also gave the same reply when asked about the
\npossibility of Edy staging more massive demonstrations<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the head of the local police subprecint, Lt. Col.
\nDjoko Satrio, said he wondered what Edy was actually up to.<\/p>\n
He also expressed doubts that the discotheque had been used
\nfor drug deals.<\/p>\n
\"The police will surely take stern action if they found more
\nthan eight Ecstasy pills. I'm afraid if there are only one or two
\npills found there, the evidence is not enough.\"<\/p>\n
He said that the police would keep a close watch on
\nentertainment establishments in town reportedly being used for
\nillicit transactions of Ecstasy pills. (18\/26)<\/p>",
