Authorities set deadline for warehouse relocation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city authorities have given businesses until
\nthe end of November to relocate their warehouses from the
\ndowntown Kota area, after nearly eleven years of frustration and
\nresistance.<\/p>\n
Head of the West Jakarta Security and Order office, Karsidin,
\nsaid that by November 30 all warehouse activities in downtown
\nKota must be moved to Kapuk and Pluit in West Jakarta, Ciracas in
\nEast Jakarta and Sunter in North Jakarta, where new spaces have
\nbeen provided by the city.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's mayoralty decision came as a surprise for many
\ndoubting the administration's intention to implement its own
\ndecision, which was originally made in 1984.<\/p>\n
Slight progress was made when several warehouses in Kota were
\nclosed three years ago. Another 55 were closed last month as part
\nof the West Jakarta mayoralty's plan to convert the area into a
\ntourist zone.<\/p>\n
The administration plans to build more discotheques, theaters
\nand restaurants in the area, in addition to preserving the
\nmaritime, wayang (leather puppet) and Jakarta History museums.<\/p>\n
Some 50 warehouse owners are still operating in the area
\ndespite the government's appeals. The warehouses are located on
\nJl. Kunir, Jl. Kali Besar Barat, Jl. Kali Besar Timur, Jl. Roa
\nMalaka, Jl. Pangeran Jayakarta and Jl. Mangga Dua.<\/p>\n
Apart from the financial constraints facing the mayoralty,
\nKarsidin said the relocation program was being hindered by
\nwarehouse owners too stubborn to move.<\/p>\n
Many continue to transport goods from their warehouses at
\nnight, playing a sort of hide and seek with security and order
\nofficers, he said. \"They say the buildings are being used as
\nhouses instead of storehouses.\"<\/p>\n
Some of warehouse owners, he added, have tried to bribe
\nmayoralty officials not to close their warehouses. \"They even use
\nstrongmen to protect the warehouses from being closed down.\"<\/p>\n
\"Regardless, we will go on closing the warehouses,\" Karsidin
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He called on the warehouse owners to cooperate with the city
\nplan and use their buildings for businesses relating to tourism.
