Authorities probe prosecutor's death<\/p>\n

In its investigation of the suspicious death of prosecutor Umbu
\nLage Lozara, a team of doctors exhumed on Thursday his body so
\nthey could do a belated autopsy; three weeks after the tough-on-
\ngraft prosecutor was found dead.<\/p>\n
After a preliminary investigation, the doctors stated that \"no
\ntraces of violence were found on Umbu's body, however, we are
\nwaiting for a complete autopsy to reveal whether or not he was
\nmurdered,\" said Gatot Suharto who led the team of doctors.<\/p>\n
The body of Umbu, the former deputy chief of the Southeast
\nSulawesi Prosecutor's Office, was buried in Kalongan subdistrict
\nin Semarang regency -- his wife's hometown.<\/p>\n
He was laid to rest on Aug. 6, two days after he was found
\ndead in his hotel room while on assignment to probe a high-
\nprofile graft case in Muna regency, Southeast Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
The chief of the provincial prosecutor's office, I Wayan Pasek
\nSuartha, who witnessed the exhumation on Thursday, reiterated
\nthat Umbu died while investigating a number of corruption cases
\nin the province. In addition to the graft case in Muna, Umbu was
\nalso looking into over 20 other corruption cases. Due to the
\nsensitive nature of his graft investigations, there has been
\nspeculation that Umbu may have been murdered by those who were
\ninvolved in the cases.<\/p>\n
\"There were many officials and building contractors allegedly
\ninvolved in those corruption cases. Umbu was a tough prosecutor
\nand we were proud of what he was doing,\" asserted Pasek.<\/p>\n
His colleagues and friends also believe his death was
\nsuspicious. Umbu's friends in the alumni association of Satya
\nWacana Christian University (USKW) found his death suspicious
\nafter they had inspected Umbu's body, shortly before he was
\nburied.<\/p>\n
When they saw the body, they were surprised because his tongue
\nwas sticking out of his mouth, and lacerations were found on his
\nface, neck and hands.<\/p>\n
However, Gatot said that it was too early to say that Umbu had
\nbeen murdered. \"The tongue sticking out is probably because the
\nbody was not preserved well. We found too much preservation
\nsubstance (formalin) in his stomach,\" said Gatot.<\/p>\n
The team of forensic doctors extracted on Thursday most of his
\nvital organs and took them to a forensic laboratory at Diponegoro
\nUniversity in Semarang for tests. The results would be made
\npublic within 10 days, Gatot added.<\/p>\n
Separately in Jakarta, the spokesman for the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office (AGO), Soehandojo, denied speculation that the
\nAGO had established a team of prosecutors to probe the death of
\nUmbu.<\/p>\n
\"The police investigators are the ones authorized to probe the
\ncase, not us,\" said Soehandojo, as quoted by the state news
\nagency Antara.<\/p>",
