Authorities know culprits in riots<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City authorities are zeroing in on people
\ninvolved in massive riots throughout the city last month,
\nGovernor Sutiyoso said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Speaking after meeting with President B.J. Habibie at the Bina
\nGraha presidential office, Sutiyoso said data had been compiled
\non which areas they came from.<\/p>\n
\"We have identified, for example, which kampongs the people
\nwho looted and burned the Glodok business district came from, and
\nthe residences of others involved in rioting in Kapuk.\"<\/p>\n
City officials are in the process of educating the people so
\nthey will not be liable to commit such wanton destruction again,
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
At least 4,940 buildings, including traditional markets,
\nshopping centers, banks, gas stations and residential houses,
\nwere damaged in varying degrees during the massive rioting. Total
\nlosses in the city are estimated at Rp 2.5 trillion.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso also said that he had asked the central government to
\narrange extra security at business centers, such as Glodok, in
\nthe effort to revive economic activities.<\/p>\n
\"I hope shopping complexes like in Glodok will not only be
\nsafeguarded by security officers or those of civilian defense
\nunits, but also military officers.<\/p>\n
\"The presence of the military officers is to give
\nbusinesspeople greater assurance for the resumption of their
\nactivities.\"<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso also reported the city's plan to rebuild damaged
\nmarkets, particularly traditional ones.<\/p>\n
\"We need funds of about Rp 61 billion for the renovation
\nactivities and the finance minister has promised to provide the
\nmoney soon.\"<\/p>\n
During his meeting with the President, the governor said he
\nalso reported on preparations for the Jakarta Fair, to be opened
\nby Habibie on July 4. (ind)<\/p>",
