Authorities demolished kiosks in Pinangsia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Security and order officers demolished yesterday
\n24 shops, which make packing boxes, on the bank of the Ciliwung
\nriver, at Pinangsia in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The residents have to make way for a mayoralty project aimed
\nat restoring the heavily polluted river.<\/p>\n
The residents did not resist the mayoralty's use of force even
\nthough the kiosk owners have not received any compensation.<\/p>\n
\"We want to be good citizens,\" said one resident, \"but we also
\nhope that the mayoralty will give us compensation.\"<\/p>\n
Some residents were worried whether they will get compensation
\nfor their kiosks, which had become the source of their livelihood
\nfor decades.<\/p>\n
\"We are afraid we will never see the (compensation) money,\"
\nSaju, one of the kiosk owners, said.<\/p>\n
An official from the Pinangsia subdistrict, Dadang Rozali,
\nsaid the government is negotiating compensation, for the affected
\nresidents, with the project's manager.<\/p>\n

Project officials were not available for comment yesterday.<\/p>\n
The shops are among 350 buildings in West Jakarta, which will
\nbe torn down to make way for the project, in Pinangsia, Mangga
\nBesar and Tantri.<\/p>\n
Of the 350 affected families, 84 have received compensation,
\noffered by the West Jakarta mayoralty.<\/p>\n
According to Saju, the West Jakarta mayoralty has offered Rp
\n31,000 (US$14) per square meter of land, while the buildings were
\nnot compensated.<\/p>\n
He added that many of the families have lived in the area
\nsince 1971 and that they have legal documents authorizing them to
\nopen businesses on the land. \"We are not illegal residents. The
\n24 box sellers pay Rp 1.5 million annually in taxes.\"<\/p>\n
Residents who rejected the compensation demanded that the West
\nJakarta mayoralty relocate them but the administration has not
\ngiven any response.<\/p>\n
\"We need another place in which to conduct our business,\" Saju
