Australian tossed in jail, released<\/p>\n

An Australian national was released from jail on Friday and
\ncleared of charges that he had drugged an Indonesian woman and
\nfled with her belongings.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono said that the man was
\nwrongfully arrested on Thursday while shopping at the Atrium
\nPlaza shopping mall in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The arrest was made after the victim, identified only as
\nIntan, called the police after seeing the man she mistakenly
\nthought was a person she met earlier who had, as she claimed,
\nrobbed her.<\/p>\n
Tjiptono apparently believed Intan's story, that she was
\noffered US$100 to \"accompany\" Robert, alias Steve -- in his early
\n40s -- to his hotel room in Central Jakarta late last year.<\/p>\n
The police officer added that this Robert was accused of
\nputting sleeping pills into Intan's drink, causing her to fall
\nunconscious for hours.<\/p>\n
\"Intan finally woke up when a room attendant broke into the
\nroom. She then claimed that the man had disappeared with her
\ncellular phone, money and jewelry, the total value of which was
\nRp 9 million.\"<\/p>\n
After releasing the foreigner on Friday, Tjiptono said that
\nRobert, alias Steve, was still on the police manhunt list.<\/p>\n
\"We had to let the other man go. His name is Mike, not
\nRobert,\" he said, refusing to elaborate further on the identity
\nof the man.<\/p>\n
Asked whether there was a possibility that Robert had robbed
\nother women, Tjiptono said that it was possible.<\/p>\n
\"Learning of his apparent modus operandi, it is possible that
\nhe has cheated many other women. We hope the victims report their
\ncases to the police,\" he said.<\/p>",
