Australian questioned over street protests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police intelligence officers are questioning an
\nAustralian national over his alleged participation in a number of
\nstreet protests here, Col. Saleh Saaf of the National Police
\ninformation unit said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Saleh said the suspect, identified as Roger Anthony Smith of
\nthe American Center for International Labor Solidarity (ACILS),
\nhad violated existing immigration regulations by participating in
\nrallies on labor issues and collecting data on Indonesian
\nlaborers.<\/p>\n
"He'll be charged under article 50 of Law No. 9\/1992 on
\nimmigration regulations. There are four other Australian
\nnationals whom we have held for questioning over Anthony's case,
\nas witnesses," he said.<\/p>\n
"He also does not have a SKLD (official letter from
\nimmigration stating that the bearer has reported to immigration
\nafter entering the country)."<\/p>\n
Saleh added that Anthony was supposed to be working as a
\nprogram consultant for the health and pharmacy division of the
\nAll-Indonesia Labor Union (SPSI).<\/p>\n
"Instead, he participated in meetings that discuss labor union
\nactivities, in board meetings that tell of union problems with
\nbusinesses here, and also found time to monitor labor rallies,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
As a result, police confiscated Anthony's passport and his
\ntemporary residence identification card (Kitas), before arresting
\nhim over immigration violations. (ylt)<\/p>",
