Australian PM arrives for talks<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Australian Prime Minister John Howard will
\narrive here this afternoon for a two-day visit on his way home
\nfrom the Commonwealth summit in Edinburgh, Minister\/State
\nSecretary Moerdiono said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Howard will meet President Soeharto tomorrow to discuss
\nbilateral and regional issues such as the ongoing Southeast Asian
\ncurrency crisis.<\/p>\n
"This visit, initiated by the Australian side, is mainly meant
\nas an opportunity for exchanges of views between the two leaders
\nto boost mutual understanding between the two governments,"
\nMoerdiono said.<\/p>\n
This will be Howard's second visit to Jakarta.<\/p>\n
His first was in September last year just a few months after
\nreplacing Paul Keating as prime minister.<\/p>\n
Soeharto openly expressed his happiness at that time that
\nHoward had chosen to come to Jakarta on his first overseas trip
\nas Australia's leader.<\/p>\n
"The two leaders will also discuss in a broad sense the
\nmonetary development in the region," Moerdiono said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto and Howard will also discuss the Asia Pacific
\nEconomic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Canada next month.<\/p>\n
Members of APEC include Indonesia, the United States
\nSingapore, Brunei, Japan, Malaysia, Canada, Thailand, China and
\nSouth Korea.<\/p>\n
After meeting with Soeharto, Howard is due to meet Minister of
\nForeign Affairs Ali Alatas and other senior officials.<\/p>\n
Howard and his entourage will leave for Australia tomorrow
