Australian aid for women's rights<\/p>\n
The Australian government has donated Rp 10 million in aid to
\nimprove public awareness of women's rights in Irian Jaya. The
\nfunds have been transferred to Fokker Irian Jaya which is a forum
\nfor various non-governmental organizations in the province,
\nincluding KKW Jayapura, P3W-GKI Irja, LBH and YPMD.<\/p>\n
The forum has been dealing with efforts to expose women's
\nrights issues, focusing on sexual harassment and violence against
\nwomen. Newspaper and police reports have revealed an increasing
\nnumber of rapes in the province.<\/p>\n
The Australian aid will be used to finance a study on rape and
\nviolations of women's rights, to disseminate information and to
\neducate the public through the media and workshops. It will also
\ngo toward the development of an information center and counseling
\nfor sexual harassment victims.<\/p>\n
The aid was presented by Jacqui Delacy, first secretary for
\ndevelopment cooperation at the Australian embassy in a meeting in
\nJayapura. Also present was Jayapura Regent Yan Pieter Karafir and
\nmembers of local NGOs.<\/p>\n
According to Delacy, Australia is delighted to be able to help
\nthe organizations in dealing with problems concerning women.<\/p>\n
Violence against women is one of 10 issues to be discussed in
\nthe upcoming the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in
\nSeptember this year. Australia has been a leading donor in the
\nPacific region.<\/p>\n
While in Jayapura, Delacy also visited the Indonesia-Australia
\nTechnical and Vocational Education Project, Part A. The four-year
\nA$19.4 million project is funded by Australian Agency for
\nInternational Development (AusAid). The project also covers
\nseveral other provinces apart from Irian Jaya.<\/p>\n
