        "content": "<p>Australia to send police to PNG<\/p>\n<p>AUSTRALIA: Flying squads of Australian police and civil servants<br>\nwill tackle lawlessness and corruption in Papua New Guinea under<br>\nan A$800 million (US$592 million) package agreed by both<br>\ncountries on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said up to 230 Australian<br>\npolice would work with their PNG counterparts in law and order<br>\nhotspots such as Port Moresby, Bougainville, Lae and the<br>\neconomically-vital Highlands Highway.<\/p>\n<p>At least four Australian judges will work in PNG and a<br>\nCanberra appointee will become the country's top lawyer, the<br>\nsolicitor-general, in a bid to improve justice administration.<\/p>\n<p>Australian civil servants will also take on senior roles in<br>\neconomic management, immigration, prisons, transport safety and<br>\naviation under the plans, announced after the PNG Ministerial<br>\nForum in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>Downer said the package, designed \"to help PNG address its key<br>\nchallenges\", would cost $800 million over five years.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's expensive but that will make a decisive difference to<br>\nthe law and justice, law and order situation in Papua New<br>\nGuinea,,\" he told reporters. -- AFP<\/p>",
