Australia to help preserve RI culture<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia and Australia agreed on Wednesday to
\ncooperate in the preservation and management of Indonesia's
\ncultural heritage.<\/p>\n
A cooperation agreement between the two countries was signed
\nat the Ministry of Education and Culture in Central Jakarta by
\nMinister Juwono Sudarsono and Australian Ambassador to Indonesia
\nJohn P. McCarthy.<\/p>\n
Juwono said the cooperation agreement was aimed mainly at
\npreserving Indonesia's heritage through the organization of
\nworkshops, seminars and conferences here and in Australia.<\/p>\n
\"Culture and heritage is more important than education. No
\neducation could possibly be taught in an atmosphere of no
\nculture,\" Juwono said.<\/p>\n
Director General for Culture Edy Sedyawati said that the
\nyearly budget for the cultural sector at the ministry comprised
\nless than 3 percent of the ministry's entire budget.<\/p>\n
Edy said that she could \"not remember\" the size of the
\nministry's budget, or that of the cultural sector alone.<\/p>\n
\"I have time and again asked for an increase to at least 12
\npercent. But in these circumstances in the economic crisis, I
\ntotally understand if the nation cannot afford it,\" Edy told The
\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n
\"I hope that the budget will be raised gradually.\"<\/p>\n
Ambassador McCarthy said that the agreement was a pleasant
\nchange from being \"embroiled in Indonesian politics\" to having a
\npart in the care of Indonesia's culture.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia is a great country with a great history. We are
\nliving right now in a moment when Indonesia is making real
