Australia to aid flood victims<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Australian government will provide A$100,000 to
\nhelp victims of flooding in Sumatra and Sulawesi and assist the
\nIndonesian Red Cross (PMI) in handling further flood emergencies
\nexpected over the next few weeks.<\/p>\n
Australia's contribution is in response to the Indonesian
\nFloods 2004 emergency appeal, launched by the International
\nFederation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The
\nfunds will be channeled through the Australian Red Cross.<\/p>\n
"The Australian funds will help meet immediate needs such as
\nshelter and the replenishment of household items," said
\nAustralian Ambassador David Ritchie.<\/p>\n
Contributions to the emergency appeal will also be used to
\nreinforce the PMI's capacity to respond quickly to emerging
\ndisasters. Further floods and landslides are likely as a result
\nof predicted heavy rainfall this month.<\/p>\n
Since 1997, Australia has contributed over A$126 million in
\nhumanitarian assistance to the victims of disasters and conflicts
