        "content": "<p>Australia ready for Asia: Keating<\/p>\n<p>CANBERRA (AFP): Australia has reformed its business and <br>\npopular culture and made the necessary macro-economic changes to <br>\ntake its place in Southeast Asia as an exporter of high-value-<br>\nadded goods, Prime Minister Paul Keating said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Keating told a business seminar attended here by about 100 <br>\nAustralian and Singaporean executives that both countries needed <br>\nto look beyond the popular stereotypes of each other.<\/p>\n<p>And he appealed to Singaporean business to accept Australia <br>\nwas now an efficient economy, with low inflation, solid economic <br>\ngrowth, and highly developed manufacturing and services sectors <br>\nbased on a highly skilled education system.<\/p>\n<p>A visiting business delegation led by Singapore&apos;s Trade and <br>\nIndustry Minister Goh Chee Wee includes representatives of the <br>\nEconomic Development Board (EDB) and 12 leading Singaporean <br>\nfirms.<\/p>\n<p>Launching a joint Singapore-Australia program aimed at easing <br>\nthe path for companies from both countries to establish joint <br>\nventures elsewhere in Asia, Keating said many stereotypes about <br>\nAustralia were now outdated.<\/p>\n<p>Both countries had identified the same potential markets and <br>\nit was logical for them to cooperate in developing opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The Southeast Asian and Australian markets had combined gross <br>\ndomestic product of about A$1,000 billion (US$700 billion), with <br>\na population of 300 million people, making it an area of <br>\n&quot;tremendous potential&quot;, he said.<\/p>",
