        "content": "<p>'Australia, NZ, S'pore banks least risky'<\/p>\n<p>Agence France-Presse, Singapore<\/p>\n<p>Banks in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore face the least<br>\nrisks in the Asia-Pacific, while those in China, Indonesia and<br>\nVietnam are the most vulnerable, Standard and Poor's said<br>\nThursday.<\/p>\n<p>Hong Kong's banking sector was given a moderate risk profile,<br>\nwhile India, the Philippines and Thailand were classified as<br>\n\"high risk\", the ratings agency said in releasing its industry<br>\nand economic risk profile for the region's banking industry.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese, South Korean, and Taiwanese banking sectors were<br>\ngiven moderate to moderately high risk profiles, followed by<br>\nMalaysia, which had a higher economic risk.<\/p>\n<p>\"Not surprisingly, the economic and industry risks of the<br>\nAsia-Pacific banking systems vary widely,\" said Ian Thompson,<br>\nmanaging director, financial services ratings.<\/p>\n<p>\"The banking industries in Australia, New Zealand, and<br>\nSingapore stand out as having the lowest risk among the Asia-<br>\nPacific systems, while Hong Kong is next with a moderate risk<br>\nprofile,\" he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\"The banking sectors of Japan, Korea and Taiwan have better<br>\neconomic risk than they do industry risk and hence have moderate<br>\nto moderately high risk profiles. They are followed by the<br>\nbanking sector of Malaysia, which has higher economic risk,\" the<br>\nstatement said.<\/p>\n<p>Standard and Poor's defines economic risk in the context of a<br>\nbanking system as the risk level of a country's economy as it<br>\naffects financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p>It factors in the economy's strength, diversity and<br>\nvolatility, the financial health of the corporate and individual<br>\nsectors as well as the government's ability to manage the<br>\neconomy.<\/p>\n<p>The industry risk category generally gauges the dynamics of<br>\nthe financial service industry and to what extent they lead to<br>\nmore or less risk from the point of view of debt holders.<\/p>",
