Australia lures more RI students<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Australia opened here on Saturday a two-day education
\nexhibition involving 72 Australian schools, universities and
\neducation bodies.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Richard Smith said the exhibition was aimed at
\nluring more Indonesians to study in Australia.<\/p>\n
He said Indonesians formed one of the largest groups of Asian
\nstudents in Australia with a total of 18,000 students.<\/p>\n
Ministry of National Education's Higher Research Director Dodi
\nNandika said before opening the exhibition that Indonesia and
\nAustralia had agreed to boost education cooperation.<\/p>\n
"The exhibition reflected the increased educational ties which
\nhad already been running well for the past 20 years," Dodi said.

20 RI maids seek protection<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE: At least 20 Indonesian maids are currently seeking
\nsanctuary at the Indonesian embassy in Singapore after their
\nSingaporean employees either beat them or raped them.<\/p>\n
"Of the 20 maids seeking refuge at the Indonesian embassy, two
\nwere raped by their employees," said Hussien Abu, labor official
\nat the Indonesian embassy in Singapore.<\/p>\n
He said Singaporean authorities were now investigating the
\nalleged rapes.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, third secretary Kartika Prawati Rum Surjani told
\nAntara on Saturday that at least 65 Indonesian maids died between
\nJanuary 1999 and April 2002. Some of them fell from their
\napartments or committed suicide.<\/p>\n
There are currently 450,000 foreign workers in Singapore, of
\nwhich 60,000 are Indonesian maids who get paid between S$230 and

SwPD moves to expand cooperation<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Members of the Southwest Pacific Dialogue
\n(SwPD) agreed on Saturday to boost and expand cooperation and
\nexchange information during its first senior official meeting.<\/p>\n
Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda said member countries
\nagreed to focus on cooperation in the field of economics, trade,
\ninvestment, and technical assistance.<\/p>\n
"These have been the subjects of discourse among members of
\nthe Southwest Pacific Dialogue in the past two years, and now we
\nare now realizing them as Indonesian has been focusing on Asia in
\nthe past 30 years," Hassan was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
The SwPD, established in 2000, has members consisting of
\nIndonesia, Philippines, East Timor, Australia, New Zealand, and
\nPapua New Guinea.<\/p>\n
According to Hassan, the Bali meeting played a strategic role
\nin the development and future of countries in the Southwest
\nPacific as "it defines future steps taken to boost interactions
