        "content": "<p>Australia-Japan rice row<\/p>\n<p>SYDNEY (DPA): Talks between Australia and Japan aimed at<br>\naverting a row over rice tariffs broke down on Monday, officials<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting in Canberra between Trade Minister Tim Fischer and<br>\nJapanese counterpart Kaoru Yosano failed to break the impasse<br>\nover a 390 percent tariff Japan plans to apply to non-quota<br>\nimports of rice Vrom April 1.<\/p>\n<p>Fischer said Australia would now make a formal complaint to<br>\nthe World Trade Organization (WTO). &quot;Australia is far from<br>\nsatisfied with the level of the tariff Japan is proposing on out-<br>\nof-quota imports,&quot; Fischer said.<\/p>\n<p>Japan bowed to WTO pressure to give foreign producers a share<br>\nof its rice market but Australia has fulfilled its quota. From<br>\nApril 1 any additional rice shipments will have the 390 percent<br>\ntariff slapped on.<\/p>",
