Australia, Indonesia to tie up on transport<\/p>\n
CANBERRA (AFP): In another sign of closer bilateral ties,
\nAustralia announced yesterday an agreement with Indonesia to
\nincrease cooperation on transport issues, including transport
\ninfrastructure development and aviation security.<\/p>\n
Transport Minister Laurie Brereton said a memorandum of
\nunderstanding signed this week with Indonesian Minister of
\nTransportation Haryanto Dhanutirto, demonstrated Australia's
\ncommitment to developing further cooperative links on transport
\nissues.<\/p>\n
"Transport infrastructure development, safety and efficiency
\nare critical to both our countries," Brereton said in a
\nstatement.<\/p>\n
"As close neighbors, it is important that we cooperate on
\ntransport issues."<\/p>\n
Among other issues in the framework agreement are moves toward
\nelectronic commerce in maritime transport, air safety accident
\nand incident investigation, education and training, and research
\nand development.<\/p>\n
The agreement followed a call by Haryanto to foreign
\nenterprises, including Australian companies, to bid for up to 11
\nbillion U.S. dollars of transport infrastructure development in
\nIndonesia over the next five years.<\/p>\n
Addressing a trade conference in Melbourne on Tuesday,
\nHaryanto, who has special responsibility for non-road
\ninfrastructure development such as ports and airports, said his
\ngovernment wanted investment through joint ventures with state-
\nowned companies.<\/p>\n
Australia is currently the seventh largest investor in
\nIndonesia in terms of the number of projects, although investment
\nis still largely concentrated in the mining sector.<\/p>",
