Australia helps Bali drug probe<\/p>\n
SYDNEY: Without the help of Indonesia and other countries that
\nexecuted dealers Australia wouldn't be able to intercept large
\nshipments of drugs, the nation's top policeman said Sunday.<\/p>\n
Federal Police commissioner Mick Keelty rebuffed allegations
\nthat officers were risking lives by sharing intelligence with
\ntheir Indonesian counterparts.<\/p>\n
Five of the nine young Australians arrested last week in Bali
\nface a firing squad if they are found guilty of attempting to
\nsmuggle almost 11 kilograms of heroin into Australia.<\/p>\n
\"We operate within our criminal justice system here in
\nAustralia and if we only cooperated with countries that had the
\nsame criminal justice system, cooperation wouldn't extend very
\nfar beyond Australia,\" Keelty said on television.<\/p>\n
He added: \"To a large degree, this has been successful,
\ncertainly in terms of heroin trafficking. We now have around 350
\nAustralians die from heroin overdoses each year. Four years ago,
\nit was over the 1,100 mark.\"<\/p>\n
Keelty said he would continue the policy of sharing
\nintelligence with Indonesian investigators.<\/p>\n
\"Of course, anything we have here, we will provide to the
\nIndonesians,\" he said. \"Conversely, anything the Indonesians
\nglean from their investigation, we would expect them to share
\nwith us.\"<\/p>\n
The arrest of the Bali Nine comes as 27-year-old Brisbane
\nbeauty student Schapelle Corby is in court in Denpasar fighting
\ncharges that she attempted to smuggle cannabis into Indonesia.
\nCorby doesn't face the death sentence but may earn a life
