Australia backs regional task force<\/p>\n
AUSTRALIA: Australia will support the creation of a regional
\nantiterrorism task force in Southeast Asia, Police Commissioner
\nMick Keelty said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The idea is expected to be discussed at a meeting of police
\nchiefs from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in
\nJakarta this week, Australian media reported.<\/p>\n
While Australia is not a member of ASEAN, its police work
\nclosely with their counterparts in countries such as Indonesia
\nand the Philippines, and Keelty has been invited to the Jakarta
\nconference.<\/p>\n
\"It's up to the Indonesians and the other ASEAN police chiefs
\nas to what initiatives they want to bring forward and what they
\nfinally agree to -- I wouldn't want to second guess them,\" Keelty
\ntold national radio.<\/p>\n
\"But we would support a team being put together to look at,
\nparticularly, the areas where there's cross-border movement of
\npeople who are suspected terrorists, who have been under
\ninvestigation by our joint teams in Indonesia and our joint teams
\nin the Philippines.<\/p>\n
\"Something like a joint effort or a collaborative effort would
\nbe a good outcome.\"<\/p>\n
Keelty said such a project would build on existing
\narrangements, such as the Jakarta Center for Law Enforcement
\nCooperation, which already involves Australia, Indonesia,
\nMalaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. --AFP<\/p>",
