Australia and Indonesia sign cooperation pacts<\/p>\n
CANBERRA (Agencies): Australia and Indonesia signed agreements
\nhere yesterday aimed at boosting cooperation and information
\nexchanges between the two neighbors' finance industries.<\/p>\n
Australian Treasurer Peter Costello and visiting Indonesian
\nFinance Minister Mar'ie Mumammad signed the umbrella agreement.<\/p>\n
Similar memoranda of understanding were also signed yesterday
\nby pension, insurance and accounting and actuary bodies from the
\ntwo neighboring nations.<\/p>\n
Mar'ie said in a statement he hoped the pact would "facilitate
\nthe exchange of ideas, materials, expertise and personnel in the
\nareas of insurance companies, pension funds and accounting
\npractices".<\/p>\n
The two ministers said the agreement would help boost training
\ncooperation.<\/p>\n
Costello and Mar'ie told reporters at the signing ceremony
\nthat similar cooperation arrangements were being negotiated by
\nthe Australian and Indonesian stock exchanges and banking
\nsectors.<\/p>\n
"The memorandum of understanding is a strong signal for more
\nbusiness cooperation, more investment and more joint ventures
\nbetween firms in Australia and Indonesia," Costello said.<\/p>\n
Mar'ie said Indonesia was eager to develop viable insurance
\nand pension schemes while its population was relatively young to
\navoid the crises facing several European nations with rapidly
\naging populations.<\/p>\n
Australian Prime Minister John Howard met his Indonesian
\ncounterpart President Soeharto in Jakarta last week.<\/p>\n
In their first meeting since Australia's coalition government
\nwon office in March, Howard reaffirmed the importance of a good
\nrelationship with Indonesia.<\/p>",
